Outside of briefly punky bursts like Ty Cobb, 1996s Down on the Upside tended to present Soundgarden in a more pensive mood than fans had been accustomed to. The amps were still cranked, but the Seattle bands fifth album preferred to hone perversely paisley-printed psychedelia (Pretty Noose) and oddly Delta blues-adjacent alt-rock struts (Burden in My Hand) than fully revisit the sound of the chart-topping Superunknown. The only real downside was that Soundgarden broke up less than a year after the records release theyd eventually reunite and follow it up with 2012s King Animal.
