Nathan Johnson – Wake Up Dead Man 2 LP

Mutant, in partnership with Cut Narrative and Netflix are proud to present Nathan Johnson’s incredible score to Rian Johnson’s third Benoit Blanc Mystery Wake Up Dead Man. The darkest of the series to date, Nathan Johnson pivots nimbly from the brighter globe-trotting previous entry Glass Onion to a gothic and beautifully haunted score. Nathan’s signature strings launch you into the heart of darkness of Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude, a troubled church in upstate New York due for a reckoning. Emotionally powerful but never dour, Nathan’s score is a brilliant continuation of one of the most tonally distinct and unique murder mystery series of all time. Composer Nathan Johnson says: “With every new Benoit Blanc mystery, Im thrilled with the bold and unique swings that Rian keeps taking. He clearly has no interest in re-making the same movie, and that applies to every element about the film, including the music. For Knives Out, it was a cutting quartet in a claustrophobic New England Mansion. For Glass Onion, it was a lush, romantic and lyrical orchestra in the Grecian Isles. This time, were going dark, were going gothic, were going Edgar Allen Poe. The very first thing you hear in Wake Up Dead Man is the sound of an entire violin section scraping their bows against their strings atonal and abrasive and then resolving into a single pure tone. Its a tug-of-war between ugliness and beauty, and to me, this conceptual motif underpins the entire score as we wrestle between a rogues’ gallery of compromised characters and lost souls before finally emerging with a 10-minute violin concerto and a heartbreaking confession. Ive said this before, but it is always an honor to work with team at Mutant and Im thrilled to share this beautiful physical artifact with all the fans of these mysteries I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.” Featuring original artwork by Randy Ortiz, additional artwork from Zach Johnson, and packaging by Mo Shafeek (who worked on previous soundtrack entries Knives Out, Glass Onion and Looper) this deluxe limited edition vinyl release is essential for collectors and fans of the series.
